The Mbongi

Throughout this lecture I took note of three key points Dr. Carr expressed:The Mbongi, today’s mission of the Mbongi, and the importance of African American studies. The Mbongi is a “common shelter” both physical and intellectual space used in traditional African functions. I learned from the lecture that we as humans create Mbongis every day to communicate, solve issues, and socialize. We also discussed various Mbongi terms and their relevance to today. Dr. Carr also expressed to us the mission of today and the importance of African American studies. He stated that we must know our past and about our ancestors in order to be successful today and educate others as well.

I find it more than valuable to know about my people and from where I come. Throughout my education thus far I have been ignorant to my history and deem it a blessing to have an opportunity within Howard University to learn about Africa and its studies. I plan to effectively participate and contribute to Howard University’s Mbongi as I pursue my education here.
